Learn the Art of Costume Design

With over two decades working in professional production of Film, Television, and Theatre, Brenda has amassed strong foundations for interpreting a director's vision, managing budgets and problem solving the challenges found in the execution of the Costume Department.

Teaching Credentials

Brenda has been teaching costume design since 2011 and working as a professional designer since 1994. She holds a BA in English, BA in Arts Education, CTSR Film School Diploma and TESOL - Teaching English as a Second Language Certificate.

The Costume Department Series

For Feature Film, Television and Commercials

A. Costume Department Operations in Feature Film and Television Production

 A 2-day session introducing the role of the Costume Department in film making 


Participants will learn department organization, coordinating with other departments, protocols and more! 

B. Jobs in the Costume Department and Where you fit in

 One 8-hour seminar detailing costume department jobs, their requirements and how to get them 


Participants will learn who does what and how the team works together.

C. Costume Design in the Digital Age

Choose from one of three 8-hour seminars that can be targeted to Costume Department personnel or Producers, Directors and UPMs:


  1. How to Costume Design in a Digital Age, 
  2. The Value of a Digital Asset Costumer
  3. Digital versus Analog Continuity

D. Advanced Costuming: Secrets of an International Designer

A 6-hour hands-on learning session  


Participants will learn tricks of the trade and secrets of the experts, how to work with directors and production designers, sourcing costumes and more!

E. Supervising Background Costumes

Customized workshops from 4 to 8 hours outlining work in  Background Costumes  


Participants will learn about the role of the background cast, how to work with the Costume Designer and supervising a cast of thousands. 

F. Stunt Costuming

Customized workshops from 4 to 8 hours outlining work in Stunt Costume . 


Participants will learn the role of stunt performers, costuming for stunts, safety, fitting and coordinating with other departments. 

G. Post-Apocalyptic & Sci-Fi Design

Customized workshops from 4 to 8 hours outlining work in Post-apocalyptic and Sci-Fi Costumes  


Participants will learn about developing design concepts, colour, Macgyver-ing, breakdown, digital resources and get hands-on experience.

H. Special Effects Costuming and Blood Artistry

Making it look real - tips and tricks from gunshots to werewolf attacks  


Participants will learn blood artistry, protocols and get hands-on experience!

I. Breakdown, Ageing and Dyeing

For contemporary, period and Sci-Fi movies. How to make new clothes look old and dirty or create a colour palette using dyes 

 

Participants will learn how to breakdown and age costumes for different film genres, what they need, and hands-on practice.


J. Designing Weapons and Accessories

Building character with outstanding accessories - working with wood, fur, leather, bone, metal and more!  


Participants will learn how to work with different materials and ensure accuracy in design.

Production and Professional Development in the Film Industry

K. How to make a movie the North American way

An 8-hour workshop on film production in North America


Participants will learn how film production differs between countries, sourcing costumes, budgeting and working in different cultural milieus.

L. Managing your Career in the 21st Century

Customized workshops from 4 to 8 hours. 


Participants will learn about branding, marketing and promoting yourself  in different service markets and how film productions operate to build a crew.
